Barbara Dawson
French Horn
A native of Woodstown, Barbara began playing trumpet in 4th grade. Her teacher was Larry Marraccini, director of the Woodstown High School Band. Switching to French horn in 6th grade, she
continued in concert band throughout high school, playing other brass instruments during football season. While in high
school Barbara performed with the All South Jersey Band and the
Salem American Legion Band on French horn. She also played recorder with various
ensembles around Salem County.
Barbara received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from
Muhlenberg College. She was a member of the Muhlenberg College band under
the direction of Ronald Demke (conductor of the Allentown Band).
After graduating Barbara
continued to play recorder in small ensembles, and for several years directed the
Junior Choir at Woodstown Presbyterian Church.
After a 22-year hiatus, Barbara began playing French horn with the
Salem American Legion Band in 2001 under the direction of Patricia
Bullock, and with the Sharptown Brass. She hs been a member of the
Salem County Brass Society since August 2005.
Barbara lives in
Alloway with her husband Ronald Dorrell. She has one daughter who occasionally plays bass
clarinet with the Salem American Legion Band.
