Phil Blackman
Director
Phil Blackman received
his Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Education from DePaul University in
Chicago and his Master of Arts degree from Glassboro State College (now
Rowan University). Mr.
Blackman taught instrumental music in the public schools for six years
before pursuing his current career as a professional
fundraiser.
He was president of
the South Jersey Band and Orchestra Directors Association. During his term of office, the
South Jersey Junior High School Band was formed. In 1994 Mr. Blackman returned to
serve as guest conductor of that group. Since then he has also been a
guest conductor of the Sussex County Junior High Honors Band, the Olympic
Conference Junior High Honors Band and twice the Kent County Junior High
Honors Band. For the past ten
years he has been associate director of The Original Hobo Band in Pitman,
New Jersey. He is also the
director of the Salem County Brass Society. When not at work, he enjoys
teaching privately, road biking and performing.
Phil resides in
Pitman, NJ with his wife Barbara, who is the choir director at St. Catherine’s church in
Clayton. They have two grown
children. Their daughter
Patricia, a flutist, is a graduate of Mason Gross School of the Arts and
the Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music. She and her husband reside in New
York where they teach and perform. Phil and Barb’s son Steven, an avid
cyclist, completed his studies at the University of Colorado in
Boulder. He is currently a
manager of a local bicycle shop and competes in the sport of cycling. Steven and his wife recently
purchased a home in Pitman.
